Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the most electric players currently in the NBA. Standing in at 6’11”, Giannis plays for the Milwaukee Bucks and led them to a recent NBA championship.
Nicknamed the “Greek Freak”, Giannis was born and raised in Athens to Nigerian immigrants. As immigrants, his parents could not easily find work in Greece, leading Giannis and his siblings to sell watches, handbags, and sunglasses on the streets of Athens.
And although Giannis and his siblings were born in Greece, they did not automatically receive Greek citizenship, leaving him essentially stateless, neither having papers for Greece or Nigeria.
However in 2007, at the age of 13, Giannis would begin playing basketball. Naturally gifted, Giannis would be drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 15th overall selection in the 2013 NBA draft.
One of the NBA’s most decorated players, Antetokounmpo won back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player Awards in 2019 and 2020, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to win two MVPs before turning 26.
In addition to the MVP award, he was also named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, becoming only the third player after Michael Jordan (1988) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1994) to win both awards in the same season.
In 2021, Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971 and was named Finals MVP. The same year, he was honored as one of the league’s greatest players of all-time by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Nikola Jokić
Nikola Jokić is a Serbian professional basketball player who currently plays for the Denver Nuggets and plays the center position. Nicknamed “the Joker”, he was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 2014 NBA draft.
Voted to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2016, he has since been named to the NBA All-Star Game four-times and has been named to the All-NBA Team on an additional four occasions. In addition, Nikola Jokić would win back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player Awards for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
Karl-Anthony Towns
Nicknamed KAT, Karl-Anthony Towns is a Dominican-American NBA player who plays center for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Having played basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats, Karl-Anthony Towns played for the Dominican Republic’s national team at just the age of 16.
Selected as the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Timberwolves, he would go on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award for the 2015-16 season and has received three All-Star selections. In addition, he was the first center to ever win the NBA’s Three-Point Contest in the 2021-22 season.
Dwight Howard
Dwight Howard currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers and is an NBA champion, an eight-time All-Star, an eight-time All-NBA Team, a five-team All-Defensive Team member, and three-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Having spent his high school career at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, Howard would forgo college and entered the 2004 NBA draft. He would be selected first overall by the Orlando Magic and would lead the team to the NBA Finals in 2009.
After his time with the Magic, Howard would play for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Houston Rockets, the Atlanta Hawks, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Washington Wizards. He would rejoin the Lakers in 2019 and would win his first NBA championship in 2020.
Tim Duncan
Tim Duncan, nicknamed “The Big Fundamental” is one of the most difficult NBA players to hate, even through his dynasty seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. An old-school player who played the game of basketball properly, without any additional fluff or exaggeration, Duncan was a world-class athlete and NBA player.
As only natural, Duncan would spend his entire 19-year playing career with the San Antonio Spurs. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 and named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
Duncan was the NBA Rookie of the Year after being selected by San Antonio with the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft.
Playing the power forward and the center positions throughout his career, he is a five-time NBA champion, a two-time NBA MVP, a three-time NBA Finals MVP, a 15-time NBA All-Star, and the only player to be selected to both the All-NBA and All-Defensive Teams for 13 consecutive seasons.
LaMarcus Aldridge
LaMarcus Aldridge last played for the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA. Having played two seasons for the Texas Longhorns, Aldridge was selected second overall in the 2006 NBA draft and would spend his first nine seasons in the league with the team who drafted him, the Portland Trail Blazers.
However, after playing with the Trail Blazers, Aldridge would join the San Antonio Spurs before making his way to Brooklyn. His time in Brooklyn was initially cut short when an irregular heartbeat was detected and he was forced to retire.
He would return to the Nets after receiving a medical clearance and assurances that his heart was functioning properly. Known for his signature fadeaway jump shot, Aldridge is a five-time All-NBA honoree and a seven-time NBA All-Star.
