What to Wear to a Hot Baseball Game?

As a true baseball fan, going out to the ballgame is a time-honored tradition.  And whether the weather calls for sunny, clear skies, rain, or snow, multiple fans will continue to make the trek to the stadium to cheer on their favorite team.

And while cold weather can definitely dampen the experience, it is infinitely easier to dress appropriately for cold weathered games, than for warm and hot ones.  That is why, below, we are going to discuss and review just what to wear to a hot baseball game.

This review will go over the specifics on the best clothes and clothing items to wear to the ballgame when the weather is hot and warm and will definitely help you to narrow down your options.

Prepare for a Hot Weathered Baseball Game

However, before we jump into the specifics on what to wear to a hot baseball game, we believe it’s important to review some items before the day of the game.  First and foremost, be sure to check the weather and ensure that the expected weather is actually warm and hot.

The weather can fluctuate quickly and unexpectedly. In addition, as baseball games can occur at different hours of the day, it is best to check the weather forecast on an hourly basis.  While the day’s weather may be hot at noon, the temperatures may drop considerably as the day progresses.

Similarly, be sure to double-check on where your seats are located.  Many baseball stadiums have shade and coverage from the sun and the elements within certain zones of the stadium.  If you are seated within the shade, then consider bringing along a light sweater or jacket with you to help warm you up if you begin to feel cold.

And lastly, if the weather is truly as hot as predicted, be sure to apply some sunscreen before heading out to the game.  Sunscreen is one of the best forms of protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays

In addition to reducing the risk of sunburn, sunscreen can dramatically reduce your risk of skin cancer.  Statistics have shown that by the age of 70, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer.  However, you can lower your risk by using sunscreen with a minimum rating of SPF 30 or higher when you are planning on being out in the sun for prolonged periods of time.

A Baseball Cap

Perhaps the easiest and simplest piece of clothing to bring with you to a hot baseball game is none other than a baseball cap.  Appropriately named, a baseball cap should be able to provide you with some relief from the beating sun and should keep your head and forehead cool.

In addition, in true fandom fashion, baseball caps come in a variety of team and MLB options.  You can choose from popular ones, such as the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox or just a plain baseball cap with no inscriptions.

However, common courtesy should be to wear the logo of the home team or your favorite team.  If you are heading down to a local baseball game, it is preferable to wear a baseball cap of the team playing at home.  If you don’t have a home-team baseball cap, you can purchase one or wear a neutral, non-MLB baseball cap.

Light-Colored Baseball Jerseys

Similarly, wearing a light-colored baseball jersey is a great addition to the baseball cap.  When the weather is hot, it is recommended to wear light-colored clothing as to not attract and absorb the heat from the sun as much as darker-colored clothing will.

And for most MLB teams, there are a plethora of light-colored jersey options to choose from.  Most MLB teams have coopted light-colored jerseys for their home or away games and these replica jerseys can be purchased online.

While there are a plethora of resellers available online, we’ve had good experiences with Outerstuff.  Their material is lightweight but durable and they provide enough variety and choice to ensure you are able to choose a jersey that fits and appeals to your individual preferences.

In addition to wearing team jerseys, you can opt to wear a simple MLB team t-shirt.  MLB team t-shirts come in a variety of cool, wonderful designs and colors.  And as they are not as limited and uniform as the team jerseys, they often have a bit more flair and character to them.

Personally, as a Yankees fan, we’ve purchased this shirt as an ode to the great Derek Jeter, with the number 2 emblazoned within a goat, representing Jeter being the greatest of all time or the “GOAT”.  We’ve also purchased this simple Nike Yankees tee with the words, Bronx Bombers emblazoned on the front, which is both comfortable and easy to wear.

Comfortable Shorts

While you can wear jeans or kakis to the ballgame, if the weather is expected to be hot and warm, then shorts are definitely our first option.  And depending on the type of shorts you wear, you can mix-and-match your top with the shorts to create a more matching look.

However, we generally go for comfort over style, especially while at the ballgame.  And as the weather will be warm and hot, you don’t want to feel sweaty and uncomfortable throughout the duration of the game.  Rather, opt for shorts or pants which are a bit loose and will allow your legs to breathe and not feel enclosed.

Sunglasses

If you are planning on attending an MLB game set for the middle of the day, it may be worthwhile to bring along a pair of sunglasses.  With the sun directly overhead, it may be difficult to view what is happening on the field without sunglasses.

Further, sunglasses should be able to help you avoid squinting and causing strain to your eyes.  And while you could opt for a pair of smart glasses, you really don’t have to and a simple pair should suffice for the day.

Staying Cool and Cooling Off

While there are plenty of options on what to wear to the ballgame on a hot and warm day, you should also make preparations in case the heat is too much to handle.  Exposing yourself to prolonged heat can cause injury and illness and may even land you at the hospital.

While at the stadium, be sure to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids such as water and sports drinks.  While you may be tempted to imbibe, you should limit yourself as to not cause further dehydration.  Drink water often and frequently and try to keep yourself cool and hydrated.

Similarly, consider investing in a portable, handheld fan.  These fans are great for keeping yourself cool and will provide a bit of wind and relief when you are feeling particularly hot.

And lastly, if you are feeling too hot, don’t be afraid to leave early.  Although you may have wanted to stay for the entirety of the game, you should take care of your health first-and-foremost.  And if you are feeling hot and not feeling well, then heading back to the car and home should help you to avoid any further illness.
