Average Cost to Rent a High School Basketball Gym

While it is difficult to estimate the exact cost of renting a high school basketball gym, we have a few figures from local and national high schools from our own research.  Generally, most high schools will rent out their basketball gyms for four-hours minimum, with each additional hour thereafter costing extra.

In addition, high school gym rentals will vary dependent on any affiliations to the school.  For instance, if a current or former high school student is looking to rent the basketball gym, the high school may offer a discounted rate for that student, regardless of use.

In our own research, we found that for a four-hour basketball gym rental, most high schools charged between $270-$700.  Each additional hour ranged from $75-$135.  While these rates vary quite wildly, it is best to speak directly to the high school that you’re interested in renting from and getting a direct quote.

Similarly, with such a wide range of rates, it may also be more prudent to receive multiple quotes from several high schools in your area.  Each high school will have their own rate and you may be able to save a significant chunk of change by receiving multiple quotes.

Useful Information to Know

While renting a high school gym may seem relatively simple and straightforward, there are a number of considerations to take into account before pulling the trigger.  We are going to review these additional considerations below.

  • You must be 18-years old or older
    • While not surprising, however in order to rent a basketball gym from your local high school, you will need to be at least 18-years old.  This is because you will be required to sign a contract for the space and minors, generally anyone under 18-years old, do not have the capacity to sign a contract.
  • Consider catering services
    • While not a necessity, many times when renting a space, you may want to consider catering services.  However, some high schools may require you to contract with an approved catering service from the school.
  • Consider locker room space
    • Similarly, when renting a high school basketball gym, you will want to ensure the rental includes locker room access.  This is ideal for your players to change into their uniform and to wash-up and get dressed after the game or practice.
  • You may be charged custodial fees
    • In addition to the quoted rate, many high schools also charge custodial fees.  These fees help to offset the cost of custodial and cleaning staff after an event.  Be sure to inquire whether or not custodial fees are included in the cost of the rental rate.
  • Ensure you have proper proof of insurance
    • While no one likes discussing the necessity of insurance, it is an absolute must in case of injury or damage to the rental space.  Be sure to acquire proper insurance and have proof of insurance for when you begin booking the basketball gym.
  • Initial deposit
    • Many high schools may also charge an initial deposit before the full amount is due.  In addition, some high schools may also charge a refundable security deposit in case of excess damage.
  • Equipment use fees
    • Lastly, some high schools may charge for equipment use.  This can include fees for basketballs, cones,  and other sporting equipment.  Be sure to check with the high school on what is and isn’t included in the rental fee before signing.
