Let’s face it, basketball backboards are boring.  They are dull, drab, and honestly lacking in imagination, color, and fun.  That’s why so many basketball players and fans alike look to pain their backboards.  Painting a basketball backboard not only gives it a new, fresh look, but also provides the backboard with a bit of your own personality.

Before you get started, there are a few simple items you will need.  Be sure to purchase these items before you begin painting the backboard as they will help make the process easier and ensure your own safety:

To begin with, simply remove the post and the basketball hoop from the backboard.  Keep both the post and the hoop, as well as any nails and bits, in a safe and secure location as to make setup easier.

With your respirator on, sand down the entire backboard using a sanding block.  You. Should scuff down the entire backboard until it is both smooth and dull.

With the cleaning rag and acetone, clean the backboard of any debris and dust.  The surface of the backboard should be clean and shiny after.

With the gel coat and catalyst, mix both in a small bucket.  Be sure to use a small stirring stick to thoroughly mix the gel.

Choose a spray paint color of your choice.  Paint the shooting box and the outer areas of the backboard with the paint color of your choice.  When applying the spray paint, be sure to hold the bottle at least 1-foot away from the backboard.  Ensure you have sprayed enough paint to cover the entire backboard and that the amount sprayed on each portion of the backboard matches.

Once you have completed spray painting the backboard, remove the painter’s tape.  Re-bolt the rim to the backboard and place the backboard on top of the pole.
